IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency for international study, migration, and work.
The IELTS test determines whether the applicant has the language skills to study or work in an English-speaking country.
IELTS is owned and administered by – University of Cambridge ESOL Exams, The British Council, IDP Education Australia and IELTS Australia. These organisations set the exam standard, maintain the IELTS exam, monitor the standard, review and change the exam format and everything related to the IELTS exam.
IELTS is accepted by more than 9,000 institutions worldwide, such as universities, corporations, immigration offices, and international professional organisations besides countries such as Australia, Canada, the UK, and New Zealand.
There are two versions of IELTS: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The IELTS Academic is for those who want to study in an English-speaking country. IELTS General Training is for those who want to work (except in some fields for which the Academic version is preferred) or immigrate to an English-speaking country.
IELTS has four parts – Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes), and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The duration of the test is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

The Listening, Reading and Writing tests of IELTS are completed on the same day. The Speaking test might be scheduled either for the same day or up to 7 days either before or after the other tests are taken.

IELTS is not recommended for candidates under the age of 16.
An IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for two years.
There is no limit to the number of times you can take the IELTS test. The candidate can take the test as many times as he or she wants.
There is no pass or fail in IELTS. Scores are graded on a 9-band scale. The score you need depends on the requirements of your visa or the institution or organisation to which you are applying. Each educational institution or organisation sets its own level of IELTS scores to meet its individual requirements.
Test results are normally available 13 days after the test date.
You can apply for an Enquiry on Results procedure at your test centre within six weeks of the test date.
Only pens, pencils and erasers. Do not forget to bring the passport or national identity card you used on the IELTS Application Form. No personal belongings or electronic devices like mobile phones or pagers will be allowed inside the examination room.
