Purpose of IELTS

IELTS or International English Language Testing System tests the language abilities of those aspiring to study or work in countries where English is the primary medium of communication. An acceptable IELTS score is necessary for getting admission in many universities of the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, etc. IELTS is conducted by three organizations: University of Cambridge ESOL Exams, the British Council, and IDP Education and can be taken up to 4 times in a month in 304 locations across 150 countries.

The test, in 2 different formats, consists of four sections: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

• Academic IELTS Exam is taken by those seeking admission in undergraduate courses or post graduate courses or by those (like doctors or nurses) aiming to join professional organizations in English-speaking countries. The test is designed to check the ability of a candidate to understand and use complex academic English in universities that have English as the medium of instruction.
• General Training IELTS Exam is meant for those studying or training at below degree level or for those who want to work in English-speaking countries or emigrate to such countries. It is the only test used by the immigration authorities of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and UK.
